Have you ever had a best friend?  Someone who you could share anything with. Someone who supported you when you were struggling, someone who was honest with you when you needed to hear it.  Mine was someone who invited me into her life and family.  She shared her children, grand-children and wide circle of friends with me and so many others.  Over 40 years, we shared and celebrated the happy events and cried together through the challenges.  She lived on another island in Maine, across a tiny bridge from Cousins Island.  I lost her to a long battle with cancer a couple of years ago.  I painted my sadness at the loss, and the gratitude for the friendship into my painting - The Wind Beneath My Wings.
